Bacteria are single-celled, microscopic organisms. Found in soil, seawater, and even deep within the earth’s crust, bacteria live in every possible environment all over the world. Not all bacteria are harmful. Some bacteria thrive on our skin while some are found in the airways, mouth, and digestive, reproductive, and urinary tracts, often without causing any harm. But there are some that produce toxins and cause infections. Sometimes bacteria that normally reside harmlessly in the body can also cause a disease.
Common bacterial infections are:
- Tetanus
- Typhoid
- Cholera
- Scarlet fever
- Diphtheria
- Lyme disease
- Plague
